Scream Queens

The Scream Queen or Scream Queen, as they call her in Hollywood. What is hidden behind this romantic and creepy name? In fact, this is the name of the role. This is the name of an actress who appears mainly in horror films as a victim pursued by the forces of evil - whether it's a maniac with a chainsaw, an ancient demon or a monster from a scientific laboratory.

The first appearance of scream queens occurred in silent black-and-white paintings of the period of the formation of cinema. The films "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920) and "Nosferatu" (1922) were included in the golden fund of cinema, and the roles of the heroines-victims in them were performed by Lil Dagover and Greta Schroeder. Even in silent films, they managed to make an incredible impression on the audience. However, another actress, Vaina Faye Ray, was the first to receive the title of “Scream Queen”. She played Anne Darrow, an actress kidnapped by the monster from the jungle - King Kong. However, Faye Ray herself did not like her title, she left Hollywood and moved to Europe.

One of the most famous “scream queens” is considered to be Barbara Steele, a British actress and producer. She became a real star in Italian horror films of the 60s. Now Barbara Steele is called one of the first “Gothic queens of pop culture.” Steele has starred in such works as "The Mask of Satan", “The Well and the Pendulum", “The Terrible Secret of Dr. Hitchcock", “Castle of Blood", “Five Graves for the Medium" and many others. The actress herself tried to find projects in other genres, by the seventies she was tired of the monotony of gloomy Gothic roles. After moving to the United States, Barbara Steele interrupted her career in cinema for a long time.

Spanish actress Macarena Gomez is a typical representative of the “scream queens". She is mostly filmed not as victims, but as antagonists. Her first role was the priestess of Uksia in Lovecraft's Dagon (2001). Then there were roles in films of various genres - from comedies to horror. Now she is starring in the TV series “Thirty Pieces of Silver” - the darkest Spanish horror film, where she plays the chosen one of the dark forces.

Mia Mello da Silva Goth is a British model and actress. There are already several bright works in her acting arsenal that give her the opportunity to be called the “scream queen”. These are films such as “The Cure for Health”, “The Abode of Shadows", “Suspiria” and, finally, "Frankenstein” by the famous Guillermo del Toro.

Crystal Lowe, a Canadian actress, has starred in a number of horror films, including "Children of Corn: Revelation," "Destination 3," "Black Christmas" and "Wrong Turn 2." However, now she is clearly trying to move away from the role of Scream Queen - many more roles in other genres have begun to appear in her filmography.
