Golden Raspberry - the history of the award
The distant 1980. American publicist John Wilson earns his living by writing accompanying texts for the famous film festival in the City of Angels. To do this, he needs to watch new films almost daily, more than two hundred in total per year. Not the easiest job, as you might think! Especially when you consider that not every tape is interesting or even worthwhile.
The turning point was the day when John Wilson watched two very bad movie musicals in a row. They made him so angry that the publicist thought that boring and unsuccessful movies should also be given prizes like the Oscar or the Golden Lion. Wilson shared the idea with friends and a year later they jointly organized something like a house party with a mock award for the most disgusting film of the year. And since in Los Angeles you can't hide anything from the ubiquitous journalists, soon the story about the award began to wander from one publication to another. That's how the Golden Raspberry was born. Three years later, after seeing the popularity of his idea, John Wilson made adjustments to the award procedure. Firstly, it was awarded on the eve of the Oscar ceremony - an excellent psychological move! After all, the ceremony attracts a huge number of representatives of the press who have nothing to do the day before the Oscar. They are happy to visit the Golden Raspberry - and now reports are appearing in all media! Secondly, the Golden Raspberry ceremony left the space of Wilson's living room and became public, accessible to numerous guests. Ten years ago, a “subspecies” of the award “For restoring reputation” was introduced - for actors and directors who were able to rehabilitate themselves with good work after failures.
Applicants for the award are selected by a general vote, participation in which costs forty dollars. For special fans of the award, a lifetime subscription is provided - for only five hundred dollars. The duration of the ceremony is short: only one hour. The award itself looks (and is worth) modestly. This is a gold-plated berry made of plastic. Hollywood stars prefer to ignore the ceremony. Rarely do any of them risk coming and getting their well-deserved prize from the hands of the organizers. Among these brave men with an excellent sense of humor are Paul Verhoeven, Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry. Most often, the award went to Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Ben Affleck and Adam Sandler. By the way, Stallone, a favorite of the organizers, even received the title of “The worst actor of the twentieth century.” However, this assessment is very biased, and the award itself is proposed to be considered just a joke and treated without aggression and anger.
